Petabyte-Scale Rook in Practice

Open-source is the gold standard for global scale and sovereign storage.

We recently shared a technical deep dive, "Running Rook at Petabyte Scale Across Multiple Regions", published on the official Rook blog by CLYSO’s Artem Torubarov. In case you missed the full technical breakdown, you can read it here: Rook Blog: Running Rook at Petabyte Scale.

120 Petabytes. 30 Regions. Zero Lock-in.

This work details how the SAP Cloud Infrastructure team is using Rook and Ceph to build a digitally sovereign storage backbone for Europe. As a cornerstone of the Apeiro Reference Architecture under the NeoNephos Foundation (Linux Foundation Europe) umbrella, this project proves that open-source is the gold standard for global scale.

Key highlights from the deployment include:

  • The Scale: Moving toward 120PB across 30 regions.
  • Operational Resilience: Real-world data on zero-downtime upgrades and automated recovery across 2,800+ OSDs.
  • The Tech Stack: Full cluster hardware specs and performance benchmark results.

Meet the experts at KubeCon in Amsterdam

If you’re attending KubeCon this week, you’ll have the chance to meet Artem in person, as he’ll be holding a technical session that goes beyond theory to share real-world insights, alongside CLYSO’s Ceph Ambassador for India and Rook expert Deepika Upadhyay.

Here are the session details:

  • Title: Introduction to Rook and Deep Dive with Ceph Storage
  • When: Wednesday, March 25, 2026 | 4:00 PM – 4:30 PM CET
  • Location: RAI Amsterdam, E103-105

Joachim Kraftmayer, CEO of CLYSO, and our engineering colleagues will also be at RAI Amsterdam and look forward to meeting you to discuss the future of sovereign and scalable storage. Contact us directly if you’d like to schedule a meeting, or go and meet our colleagues at the NeoNephos booth #993 to discuss digital sovereignty, Ceph performance, and how CLYSO can help you scale your storage infrastructure without vendor lock-in.
